Install Skype on Ubuntu 16.04

In this tutorial we’ll learn how to install Skype on Ubuntu 16.04. We will also install and configure its prerequisites. Skype is a messenger program which lets you chat via text, through video chat and by voice over internet protocol. The text and video chat support are supplied for free, but the telephone service does cost cash, although the price of a call is much lower than a typical one. Skype supports Windows, Mac, Linux, and many mobile devices such as Blackberry, Android, iOS, Windows telephones, Tablets, and Smartphones as well.

I recommend to use a minimal Ubuntu server setup as a basis for the tutorial, that can be a virtual or a root server image with an Ubuntu 16.04 minimal install from a web hosting company or you use our minimal server tutorial to install a server from scratch.

Install Skype on Ubuntu 16.04

Step 1. First, ensure your system and apt package lists are fully up-to-date by running the following:

apt-get update -y
apt-get upgrade -y

Step 2. Installing Skype.

First, download the Skype Linux Debian package from its official web site:

wget https://repo.skype.com/latest/skypeforlinux-64.deb

If you are using 64 bit Ubuntu system, then you must enable i386 architecture with the following command:

sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386
sudo apt-get update

At this step we use dpkg command to install the previously downloaded Skype package:

dpkg -i skypeforlinux-64.deb

In case you got any dependency error, then run the following apt command to resolve dependency issues and re-run dpkg command to install downloaded Debian package:

apt-get -f install

Skype is now installed and ready to use. If you cannot find skype shortcut on any of the GUI menus re-login or simply start skype from terminal by typing skype command:

skype

Congratulation’s! You have successfully install and configure Skype on your Ubuntu 16.04 server. Thanks for using this tutorial for installing Skype messenger service on Ubuntu system.
