In this tutorial we will show you how to install PhpStorm on Ubuntu 18.04. We will also install and configure its prerequisites. JetBrains PhpStorm is a commercial, cross-platform IDE for PHP built on JetBrains IntelliJ IDEA platform. PhpStorm provides an editor for PHP, HTML, and JavaScript with on-the-fly code analysis, error prevention and automated refactoring for PHP and JavaScript code.

I recommend to use a minimal Ubuntu server setup as a basis for the tutorial, that can be a virtual or a root server image with an Ubuntu 16.04 minimal install from a web hosting company or you use our minimal server tutorial to install a server from scratch.

Install PhpStorm on Ubuntu 18.04

Step 1. First, ensure your system and apt package lists are fully up-to-date by running the following:

apt-get update -y
apt-get upgrade -y

Step 2. Installing Java.

Java is required for the installation of PhpStorm so let’s install Java JDK:

apt-get install openjdk-9-jdk

Step 3. Installing PhpStorm on Ubuntu 18.04.

First go the official website and download the tar archive:

wget https://download-cf.jetbrains.com/webide/PhpStorm-2018.1.3.tar.gz

After downloading the package extract using the following command:

tar -zxvf PhpStorm-2018.1.3.tar.gz

Next, switch to the bin directory:

cd PhpStorm-181.4892.97/jre64/bin

Then, run the installation script using the following command:

./phpstorm.sh

An installation wizard will appear now and if you are doing a fresh installation choose “Do not import settings.”:
