In this tutorial we will show you how to install Mate Desktop Environment on Ubuntu 16.04. We will also install and configure its prerequisites. Step 1. First, ensure your system and apt package lists are fully up-to-date by running the following:
apt-get update -y apt-get upgrade -y
Step 2. Installing Mate Desktop Environment on Ubuntu.
First, add the PPA repository to install Mate Desktop:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:jonathonf/mate-1.18
Next, run following commands to install MATE desktop for the first time:
sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install --install-suggests mate-desktop
Finally, logout of your current session or restart your system and choose MATE desktop at the login interface as in the image below:
