In this tutorial we’ll learn how to install GNOME on Ubuntu 16.04. We will also install and configure its prerequisites. GNOME is one of the most popular desktop environments for Linux users today. Ubuntu Desktop 16.04 comes with the unity desktop by default. But we can install gnome 3 desktop on Ubuntu if you like to use gnome 3 as your desktop environment.
I recommend to use a minimal Ubuntu server setup as a basis for the tutorial, that can be a virtual or a root server image with an Ubuntu 16.04 minimal install from a web hosting company or you use our minimal server tutorial to install a server from scratch.
Install GNOME on Ubuntu 16.04
Step 1. First, ensure your system and apt package lists are fully up-to-date by running the following:
apt-get update -y apt-get upgrade -y
Step 2. Installing GNOME.
First, add the GNOME PPA repository with the command:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3-staging sudo add-apt-repository ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3
Update and install with this command:
sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install gnome
After the installation is finished, logout from your desktop session and when you go back to the login screen, you will see a little icon next to your user name where we can select gnome as the default desktop environment:
